Alice Hastings Crompton Portrait

In her foreword to Happy as Kings, one of two children’s books for which she wrote the words and music in 1937, Crompton (1874-1969) notes that she wrote the songs “for children everywhere and for grownups who have knowledge of the hearts of children.” The publication of a second book, The Singing Year, enabled her to join the National League of American Pen Women, an organization of women in the field of creative arts who had received pay for original work of professional quality.

Crompton was a founder (1916) of the Worcester Girls Club (now Girls Incorporated of Worcester) and was active in charitable causes. She was married to industrialist George Crompton II (Crompton & Knowles Loom Works).
