Helen Waite (1884-1966) grew up in Worcester with all of the advantages her socially prominent family could offer, including a good education and the opportunity to travel. Her father, Albert H. Waite, became president of the First National Bank in Worcester in 1894. Helen Waite graduated from Classical High and from the Mary A Burnham School for Girls in Northampton, Massachusetts. She wrote poetry for her own enjoyment and was also interested in art. She owned several paintings by the artist of this portrait, loaning them for exhibition in Boston and Washington.
