11th Annual Bus Tour
The destination of the 11th annual WWHP bus trip is Newport, RI. The bus boards at 8:00 AM at YWCA, One Salem Square, Worcester, and arrives for 10:00 AM at the first stop, the Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Avenue. Founded in 1912, the Newport Art Museum operates a gallery in the John N.A. Griswold House, a National Historic Landmark that is the premier American Stick-style building. The permanent collection of more than 2,300 works of American art concentrates on art and artistic activity from the late 19th century to the present, and on those contemporary and historic works emphasizing the role played by Newport and New England artists, established and emerging, in the development of American art.
After the museum, participants will enjoy lunch at La Forge Museum, 186 Bellevue Avenue. The restaurant is situated on the grounds of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and has been operated by the Crowley family for over 35 years.
The afternoon portion of the trip will be a tour of Rough Point, the oceanfront estate of Doris Duke, heiress, philanthropist, and art collector (1912-1993). Rough Point was built in 1891 by Frederick Vanderbilt and purchased by James B. Duke in 1922. After her father’s death, Doris hired Horace Trumbauer to redesign the house, elegantly altering its original Gothic design. Currently on exhibit at the estate is No Rules: The Personal Style of Doris Duke. The exhibit examines a portion of Doris Duke’s clothing collection ranging from lavish evening gowns with exquisite embroidery to the simple silhouette of a little black dress.
